Rei has distinctive "ON" and "OFF" modes, distinguishable by both his appearance and behaviour.
ON: Hair tied in a high ponytail which reveals an undercut, with a single strand of loose hair in front. Straight posture. No nonsense attitude and intense focus on the task at hand. His "ON" mode is typically reserved for work-related situations, though his posture will straighten when he is tense or nervous. He also ties his hair back during EP 4 as it makes him look more attractive and presentable, and Kazuki insists that they make a good first impression at Miri's daycare.
OFF: Loose hair and slouched posture with an uncaring and lazy demeanor. Most of the time, during his "OFF" mode, Rei can be found lazing on the couch playing video games. His "OFF" mode is also when he is most relaxed and calm, and it is a good indicator of how comfortable he is. For example, he is always in "OFF" mode at home with Kazuki and Miri, but he is never in "OFF" mode around his father and boss, Suwa Shigeki.
The exception to this is EP 12, when his hairtie was ripped out after the fight with Ogino. In his confrontation with Shigeki, he is literally and metaphorically putting his real, unadultered self on display as he has finally accepted who he is and who he wants to be. He is beaten and bruised but he has survived. His unconditional love for Kazuki and Miri carried him forward and both he and his love persevered despite everything. In this scene, he is also finally comfortable enough to confront Shigeki's abuse and leave the organisation once and for all.

From the very beginning, we see Rei is terrible at cleaning up after himself. The house Kazuki comes home to after his honeypot job in EP 1 can only be described as a garbage hoarder's dream. There's used cup ramen containers everywhere, an ashtray overflowing with far too many cigarettes for 3 days, the air is choke full of tobacco smoke and there's mountains of boxes filled with cat food for the kitten Rei picked off the street which he is not at all capable of caring for (which Kazuki later returns to the street, saying they could die tomorrow and shouldn't take in something they can't care for). And what about the man himself? Well, he looks absolutely terrible. The guy has probably slept a grand total of 2 hours in the past 3 days and he definitely hasn't showered.
And at first, Rei is completely unconcerned with this fact. Yeah, he's disgusting, but that doesn't exactly affect his work. He only needs to take a shower and have a good rest (or the more likely alternative: chug a shit ton of caffeine) right before a job and it'll turn out fine.
However, as the series progresses, Rei comes to realise that him being useless around the house does have an impact on his newfound family. This realisation hits him hard in EP 7, when Kazuki abandons him and Miri for his 2-day pseudo-therapy trip mentioned previously. Earlier in the episode, when Kazuki asks Rei to do a little more to take care of Miri, who he correctly points out is a handful, Rei insists he's already doing his best since he plays games with her all the time. However, once Kazuki is gone, Rei realises he has no fucking idea how he's supposed to care for Miri. He doesn't know where the food is, he notices all the housework that has to be done, and when Miri asks him about daycare, he realises he doesn't even know what she needs to bring. Just as they're ready to leave, they're greeted with heavy downpour, which prompts Rei to ask Miri where her umbrella is. She informs him it broke, which leds to Rei having to withstand the vicious rain while desperately pedalling as fast as humanely possible because fuck they're already so late. Only... when they reach the daycare, nobody's there, because it's fucking Sunday and Rei completely forgot because he was too absorbed in playing games all the time.
When they get back, Rei finally collapses on the sofa after a much needed shower, which is when he realises Miri left her soaking wet raincoat on the floor and now it's made a gigantic puddle in the middle of the room. Of course, Rei sighs and decides to mentally bookmark cleaning as something he'll get to later. When is later? Who knows. If he waits long enough, Kazuki will eventually come back, and then Kazuki can clean it up. But when is Kazuki coming back? Who knows. The more pressing matter at hand is, of course, to play with Miri instead.
Eventually, as evening rolls in, Miri points out that she's hungry again. Side note, we see the first signs of Miri's oncoming illness here as she's sniffling and clearly has a runny nose. However, Rei either doesn't notice this or, more likely, he brushes it off as something trivial since he, being the assassin he is, is able to simply toughen out similar illnesses until they pass. Unfortunately, Miri is a tiny 4 year old whose immmune system is nowhere near ready to tackle a flu. Of course, Rei doesn't understand this, so he decides to get pizza since he still has no clue where the proper food is, or if there even is any. This understandably excites Miri, though when Rei requests no tomatoes or mushrooms - two food items highlighted earlier in the episode for Rei and Miri's adamant distaste of them - Miri reminds Rei that papa Kazuki said they gotta eat their veggies. So Rei adds a side of french fries, because of course he does lol.
The next day, Rei wakes up to a very heavy and very hot little ball on his chest: Miri. That runny nose has become a full blown fever now, and a very high one at that. Panicked, Rei calls Kazuki, who is still ignoring him because he's still mad about the whole treating-him-like-a-disposable-maid thing and doesn't know Miri's sick. So, Rei goes on a hunt for medication, desperately pulling open every random drawer because surely Kazuki kept medication around the house somewhere, right? When he finally finds the medication drawer, he lets out a sigh of relief - only to be swept up in panic once more when he realises the medication isn't suitable for kids under 12. At this point, Rei realises his only option is the hospital, and so he picks Miri up, ready to endure awkward social interactions if it meant helping Miri get better. Only... he has no fucking clue where the hospital is.
So Rei wraps Miri in a blanket and takes her to the only place he could think of: Yadorigi, Kyu's cafe. It should be noted that earlier in the episode, when Rei and Miri embarked on their journey to the daycare, Rei made a specific effort to change out of his "house" clothes (a white t-shirt with a kitten on it and blue shorts). However, when he bursts through Yadorigi's door, he's wearing these "house" clothes which highlights the fact that he literally ran out the house as quickly as possible because all he cared about was getting help for Miri. He didn't stop to change or even look for an umbrella, simply wrapping Miri in a blanket and allowing himself to get drenched because her wellbeing was more important than whatever minor inconvenience he experienced.
When Kazuki finally comes home, he scoffs at the house which has been left in complete disarray, because really, what was he expecting? However, when he peers into Miri's room and sees Rei, who fell asleep by Miri's bedside while holding her hand, he realises Rei did try his best to take care of her. Rei was just so overcome with worry that he stayed by Miri's side the entire day, never once leaving to clean the apartment or even play games, and eventually fell asleep by her side.
